On April 21, 1856 stone Masons in Melbourne Australia cast down their tools and walked off the job in protest over their employers refusal to accept their demand for reduced working hours.
Their demand was for 8 hours for work, 8 hours for play, and 8 hours for sleep. The 888 movement was a first step in progressive labor law. This brought employers to the table and lead to an agreement that stonemasons work no more than an eight-hour day.
The example given here is that our symbolic working tools can make actual changes in the way we live and act as a community. As rough Ashlars one and all we might benefit from using some other tool at our disposal. Let’s chat about what that could be at our stated meeting. To encourage that conversation John Gaudette, A local expert on Belgian beers and a brewer, will come and educate us on that style of libation and its history. There will be “educational aids” for each table.
See you at the meeting.
